5-mo total exports grow 9.1% YoY; deficit narrows YTD to BGN 1.6bn

Bulgaria’s May’19 exports (FOB) to third countries increased by 13% YoY to BGN 1.5bn while imports fell by 7.3% YoY to BGN 1.5bn resulting in a balanced trade. The YTD total imports from outside the EU reached BGN 8.2bn (+5.3% YoY) while total exports within the same period amounted to BGN 7.4bn (+14.4% YoY), which narrowed the trade deficit by 38.7% YoY to BGN 0.8bn. In May’19 exports to the EU (BGN 3.2bn) increased by 4.8% YoY, while imports (BGN 3.3bn) gained 4.5% over the same period. The monthly trade deficit was BGN 0.1bn and remained flat YoY. The 5-mo trade balance with the EU was still positive – BGN 0.1bn (BGN -0.4bn in the base period) on BGN 15.9bn of exports (+6.8% YoY) and BGN 15.8bn of imports (+3.1% YoY). The trade deficit in May’19 was BGN 0.2bn, BGN 0.3bn less than during the same period of 2018. YTD total exports grew by 9.1% to BGN 23.3bn, while total imports rose by 3.8% YoY and reached BGN 24bn leaving the trade deficit at BGN 1.6bn, BGN 0.5bn less YoY.
