2nd Round of Talks on Bulgaria's Central Bank Governor Due Fri
A second round of consultations between the parliamentary groups of the left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria, ruling Simeon II National Movement and its junior coalition partner
A second round of consultations between the parliamentary groups of the left-wing Coalition for Bulgaria, ruling Simeon II National Movement and its junior coalition partner the Movement for Rights and Freedoms has been scheduled for Friday morning, it emerged Wednesday after a meeting in the same format was held. The Bulgarian Socialist Party will back the candidacy of Ivan Iskrov for a new governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, provided that he vows not to undertake risky operations in managing the fiscal reserve, Socialist leader Sergey Stanishev announced after the meeting. The actual policy of the bank's governor is what matters, Stanishev said, justifying fears voiced over Iskrov's intention to manage actively the fiscal reserve. In the words of Plamen Panayotov, floor leader of the Simeon II National Movement, all three parties have shown an impressive sense of responsibility. He described the first round of talks as a step forward, since all participants have express similar views on the bank's policy. The option of naming a third nominee will be considered on Friday. Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, sounded upbeat on reaching consensus on a new BNB governor. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms will not propose a third nominee and will back the candidacy of Ivan Iskrov, chairman of the parliamentary commission on budget. Only a day earlier Kemal Eyup, lawmaker of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, said his party would back neither of the two nominees if a third candidacy would not be proposed. The ruling National Movement Simeon II has nominated Ivan Iskrov, while current Bulgarian National Bank Governor Svetoslav Gavriiski, whose term expired June 11, enjoys the support of the right-wing opposition Union of Democratic Forces.
