More than 6 weeks after the votes in Bulgaria's general elections were tallied up and after 2 failed attempts to put together a new government, the nation is almost guaranteed to have its next cabinet today. The breakthrough was made possible after BSP, NDSV and DPS - the 1-2-3 parliamentary formations, signed on Monday a coalition agreement and unveiled the structure and line-up of their joint cabinet headed by socialist leader Sergei Stanishev. Later on Monday, president Georgi Parvanov officially mandated DPS, the party of ethnic Bulgarian Turks, to form the new cabinet and signed a decree proposing to the MPs to approve the BSP-led government. The make-up of the cabinet, where BSP, NDSV and DPS split the seats in a 8:5:3 ratio, will be put to a vote in parliament on Tuesday afternoon. It is expected to be backed by all 169 MPs of the 3 coalition partners as well as the 4 MPs that defected from far-right nationalist formation Ataka. Making up the nay camp will be right-wing formations ODS, DSB and BNS and the remainder of the Ataka MPs. The distribution of the votes suggests that the BSP-led cabinet can count on the widest parliamentary support in Bulgaria's post-1989 history.
