Bulgarian telco Max Telecom announces commercial start-up of WiMAX network

Bulgarian start-up telco Max Telecom Tuesday officially announced the commercial availability WiMAX-based services.
In June this year, Max Telecom said it had the city of Pazardjik. A couple of months later, deployment reached the Simeonovo and unwired Dragalevtsi residential districts in the capital Sofia. At the moment, the company has wireless coverage in 10 cities, accounting for 30% of the country's population.
Max Telecom, which plans to achieve a 90% nationwide coverage by the end of 2008, said it has invested EUR 15m so far in the WiMAX rollout and has set aside as much for 2008.
The company is set to debut in November a VoIP service with a carrier selection code 0999. The Max Telecom already has an interconnection agreement with local wireless telecom carrier Globul and is currently testing link-ups with another cellular operator, Mobiltel, and with BTC, the nation's dominant landline carrier.
WiMAX permits have also been granted to Mobiltel, Nexcom Bulgaria and Transtelecom. The Mobiltel WiMAX network is active in 10 cities. The service is available only to corporate customers. Nexcom marked the one-year anniversary of its WiMAX rollout. Coverage is available in 10 cities. The company plans to invest over EUR 20 mln in the platform through 2009. The latest WiMAX news out of Transtelecom was that the company has just started to stream TV content over its wireless network. It has pushed back to 2008 the commercial start of other WiMAX-based services.
