Bulgaria’s state and state-guaranteed debt in October amounted to EUR 8.144 billion, including EUR 6.815 billion external and EUR 1.328 billion internal debt, the finance ministry's monthly bulletin shows. Compared to September, the debt has dropped by EUR 64.9 million as a result of exchange rate differences. It has also shrunk as a share of the gross domestic product to 41.9%. Payments serviced in October totalled BGN 2.703 billion. As much as BGN 2.364 billion was paid on the country's foreign debt. The currency structure of the debt also changed, as euro-denominated debt increased to 39.5% of the total figure. Debt in US dollars made up 35.5%, in leva, 11.18%, in other currencies, 13.82%. Bulgaria's debt burden decreased for a fourth consecutive month. The biggest drop was registered in July, by EUR 567 million, when the government bought back the DISC bonds. If the hints of finance minister Milen Velchev about a buy-back of the FLIRB bonds turn out true, Bulgaria's debt burden will fall by another EUR 740 million.
