Greek state-run power utility PPC, tapped in 2005 to acquire Bulgarian thermal power plant Bobov Dol, has notified the energy ministry that it is also interested in buying the mining company of the same name, said Vladimir Yankov from the Bulgarian energy ministry. The Bobov Dol mining company will go bankrupt if it is not acquired by a foreign investor, said Yankov. PPC has said it intends to use the mines as the main supplier for the coal-fired TPP. A decision regarding the privatisation of the Bobov Dol mines will not be taken before the litigation of the sell-off procedure for the power station of the same name is concluded. Bulgaria's Privatisation Agency (PA) admitted last week that the PPC appeal of the cancellation of the privatisation procedure for TPP Bobov Dol was meritorious. PPC bid EUR 36.17 mln for a 51% stake in the TPP and pledged EUR 34.8 mln for a capital raise. The Greek company also undertook to buy out the residual interest for EUR 34.75 mln by 2007. Bobov Dol mines posted a loss of BGN 9.2 mln in 2005. The company's debts total BGN 39.7 mln. The final draft of the recovery plan for the mining company will be approved shortly, said energy minister Rumen Ovcharov last week.
