Interior Ministry To Tap Mobile Networks, Amendments Envisage.

The Bulgarian Telecommunication Company and the mobile phone operators in Bulgaria will be obliged to supply and install at their own expense infrastructure for use of the national security and defense services, amendments to the Telecommunication Act, proposed by Interior Minister Georgi Petkanov, envisage. The special services will maintain a non-stop contact with BTC, Mobikom analogue cell phone operator and MobilTel digital phone operator and will be able to tap their networks. The cost to supply the necessary electronic equipment for each of the mobile operators will vary between BGN 3 M and BGN 4 M according to the number of their subscribers. MobilTel said they already have the necessary equipment at their disposal. Added compliance costs are not expected to affect subscription and call charges. Mobikom operator installed wire-tapping infrastructure three years at the insistence of the Interior Ministry. Control equipment introduced by Mobikom and MobilTel costs about USD 1,5 M.
