Nokia Bulgaria donated Monday a unique communication system to Bulgaria's Interior Ministry. The mobile radio-communication system TETRA gives policemen who carry the special TETRA terminals wireless access to their offices' database, wherever they are. Stefan Widomski, Senior Vice President of Nokia Corporation, handed 12 terminals as well as the server and special software needed for the systems' functioning, to Interior Minister Georgi Petkanov. Nokia will also provide free training to those of the Ministry's employees that will use the system. In May 2003, Bulgaria launched the first TETRA system in Southeastern Europe and in EU-candidate countries, to serve its border police at the Turkish frontier. However, only 10% of the system's potential is actually in use at the moment, Director of Nokia-Bulgaria Krassimir Ganchev said. He stressed on the fact that the TETRA standard has been approved by the European Union, and said that at this moment Bulgaria's policemen need such facilities more than ever.
