Data released by Bulgaria's telecom regulator shows that the number of public pay phones has declined from 20,605 in 2004 to 15,387 in 2005 as BTC, the only active public pay phone operator, continues to dismantle coin booths and to replace them with prepaid card devices. The telecom has recorded BGN 11.8m in revenues from public pay phone services in 2005, 25% down on the previous year. Local companies Intertel and SpectrumNet have also been licensed to operate pay phones but are yet to start running.
