On Jan 14, Bulgaria’s Competition Protection Commission gave a green light to United Group to acquire Nova Broadcasting Group from Advance Media Group (AMG). The commission decided that the acquisition will not lead to the establishment or strengthening of a dominant market position. The price of the deal was not announced, but media reports tentatively valued the acquisition at over BGN 300m. Nova comprises of 10 TV channels including national NOVA TV, the country’s largest online platform Net Info that reach on average 80% of the Bulgarian population every month as well as four radio stations. With another decision from Jan 14, the CPC also allowed United Group to acquire Telegraph newspaper as well. The acquisition is part of the strategy of United Group to expand the portfolio and improve the quality of the products and services offered by the group in Bulgaria.
Recall that in 2018 CPC denied PPF (owner of the telecommunication company Telenor) to acquire Nova Broadcasting with some quite controversial arguments. The latter was sold to AMG in April 2019, as AMG acquired 95% equity stake of Nova for an Enterprise Value of EUR 185m as well as the 5% owned by Eastern European Media Holdings. Meanwhile, PPF acquired the BTV Media Group (the largest independent media in Bulgaria) after clearance by the European Commission.
United Group is a Dutch-based telecommunications and media company, majority owned by BC Partners, which acquired the largest local telecommunications company Vivacom in August 2020 for c. EUR 1.3bn EV.
